The Employee Retention Credit is a 2020 and 2021 payroll tax credit that you can qualify for if you started a business during the pandemic, your business was fully or partially closed due to a government order during that time, or has experienced a significant drop in gross receipts in 2020 or 2021 when compared to 2019. You must have had payroll and paid payroll taxes in 2020 or 2021 to qualify.
This is a refundable credit that pays back 50% of qualified payroll costs in 2020 and 70% per quarter in 2021. Of course, there are caps on how much you can have refunded, and the qualifiers for this credit are sometimes difficult to understand, but that is what we do.
